I'm trying to modify a program called COM_KILLER, whose only purpose is to
detect compute-intensive jobs and lower their priority, giving other users a
chance at using the system. Unfortunately, it lowers the priority to 1, which
is the priority of a batch queue on the system. recently the system use
profile changed, and we now have a user who, in trying to be nice, submits all
his compute-intensive jobs to the batch queue. So, COM_KILLER ends up lowering
compute intensive interactive jobs to a level where they are competing directly
with compute intensive batch jobs.
As a remedy I changed the program to lower the interactive job's priority to 2.
Unfortunately I cannot recompile the program, and that's where I am looking for
some help.
The line which gives me problems is:
( [ inherit ( 'sys$library:starlet.pen' ) ] }
This is the very first line in the file, even before the PROGRAM statement.
When I compile it I get the following error messages:
00001 0 0 ( [ inherit ( 'sys$library:starlet.pen' ) ] }
1 2 3 4
%PASCAL-E-SYNPROMOD, (1) Syntax: PROGRAM or MODULE expected
%PASCAL-E-SYNIDENT, (2) Syntax: identifier expected
%PASCAL-E-IVUSEATTR, (3) Invalid use of INHERIT attribute
-PASCAL-I-CNTBEDEFDECL, (3) - not allowed on any definition or declaration part
%PASCAL-E-SYNASCII, (4) Illegal ASCII character
So, being familiar with only basic Pascal and not its more esoteric features,
how can I fix the above line so it will compile properly? I tried the obvious
remedies, like placing it after the PROGRAM statement and changing the trailing
right brace to a right paren. The modified source code (first 4 lines) is
PROGRAM com_killer ( input, output, f ) ;
BEGIN
( [ inherit ( 'sys$library:starlet.pen' ) ] )
END
This got me the following error messages:
00001 0 0 PROGRAM com_killer ( input, output, f ) ;
1
%PASCAL-E-PROPRMLEV, (1) Program parameter F is not declared as a variable at the outermost level
00003 0 1 ( [ inherit ( 'sys$library:starlet.pen' ) ] )
1
%PASCAL-E-SYNNEWSTMT, (1) Syntax: start of new statement expected
00048 0 0 const
1
%PASCAL-E-SYNPERIOD, (1) Syntax: "." expected
%PASCAL-W-SRCTXTIGNRD, (1) Source text following end of compilation unit ignored
%PASCAL-E-ENDDIAGS, PASCAL completed with 4 diagnostics
One last thing I did try was to remove the ('s altogether and put the line
back at the start of the file, like so:
[ inherit ( 'sys$library:starlet.pen' ) ]
PROGRAM com_killer ( input, output, f ) ;
Now it compiles with a much more straightforward error: file not found.
Evidently it can't find SYS$LIBRARY:STARLET.PEN. I did a search for that
filename in the entire SYS$SYSROOT:[*] area and did not find it. I also did a
LIBRARY/LIST SYS$LIBRARY:STARLETSD.TLB, which is the only text library that
looked like it might contain some Pascal stuff: no PEN module. I'm really
puzzled on how this ever got working.
My environment is VMS V5.5 and PASCAL V4.2-55 on a VAXstation 4000. If you can
enlighten me as to the source :-) of my problem I'd be grateful. This was
freeware, origin unknown, by the way.

Try: $ PASCAL/ENVIRONMENT=SYS$LIBRARY:STARLET.PEN SYS$LIBRARY:STARLET.PAS (You might want to make sure that STARLET.PEN is world readable). -- Dick Munroe Internet: munroe@dmc.com Doyle Munroe Consultants, Inc.
