Hello again, folks. More stuff about my VMS-based Ethernet monitoring tool. Seems a lot of you have found a "feature" in ETHERMON V2.4 that my old version FORTRAN compiler was hiding from me. Well, thanks to a gentleman out on the Net with a newer compiler version and enough nerve to trust me on his system with privileges, ETHERMON has been fixed. (Thanks, Harry!) ETHERMON V2.4-1 is now available via anonymous FTP from gw.syr.ge.com. It fixes that <censored> control-C bug, fixes the problem with the SET MESSAGES [msgtyp] ON command, and adds an initialization file capability. It is in the usual format (4096 byte block BACKUP saveset, with accompanying .FDL file; make sure to transfer the saveset in BINARY mode). Unfortunately, I do not know how to tell the folks with Unix or Ultrix gateways or DEC UCX software on their VMS gateways how to get the record structure restored after FTP-ing the saveset. Any UCX gurus out there who can answer this question? (I can't; my site uses TGV MultiNet). Oh, yeah, there is another "feature" in the VMS V5.4-3 and up Ethernet device drivers: if you have DECnet service enabled on a port, and then invoke ANY promiscuous mode application on that port (ETHERMON or somebody else's utility), you start getting every-10-seconds complaints about "bad MOP function code" via OPCOM from the DECnet MOM process. I'm still working on a work-around; anyone with DECnet internals knowledge who could identify the cause of this? Thanks again for the support, everybody. I'm still accepting suggestions for improvements; the tag list idea that someone sent in was interesting, and I'm definitely going to have to take a look at that one. Keep on hacking (white hat, of course).
