The power company has asked us if we could handle 'rolling brownouts' distributed in the LA area this summer. Of course the answer is NO, unless we have a UPS for our VAXcluster and network equipment racks distributed around campus. The immediate question is how much would this cost? I've never paid much attention to the state of power systems, so if anybody has done this research, I'd like a rough dollar figure for a data center UPS. Can this be done with battery systems? Or are motor-generators necessary? For those that want me to be more specific: Loss of power for up to 30 minutes (I'd want an hour of UPS to be safe). 2 VAX 6000 (-330,-320, 4x32MB each, CIBCA, DEBNI) 1 MicroVAX II 2 HSC50 6 RA81 2 RA82 4 RA90 1 TA78 1 TA81 1 Datacomm rack with Chipcom hub, DELNI, DEMPR, terminal servers. Several buildings on campus with DEMPR, terminal server to feed the building. I'll leave powering the desktops to the users.
