This may not be quite a FAQ, but is at least an OAQ (Occasionally
Asked Question :-). I wrote up a tags package that is in the INFO-TPU
archives. I don't claim that it is commercial quality and I don't
have any clue about whether it uses the same file format as *ix ctags,
but it does work for me. The tags file is created using a command
procedure (included in the package) that uses a number of TPU command
files (also included) to create tags for different file types
(depending on the file extension). It currently "handles" .TPU, .FOR,
.C, .H, .LSP, .RNO, .PAS, .TEX, .OPS, and .DOC (for my own special
effects) files. The types of things that are tagged vary with the
file types. Patterns for other object types may be desirable too, but
I tagged the things that seemed obviously needed, e.g., FUNCTIONs,
SUBROUTINEs and STRUCTUREs in FORTRAN, PROCEDUREs, FUNCTIONs, MODULEs,
CONSTs and TYPEs in Pascal, etc. Send me wish lists and I may get
around to implementing them. (Or better, send me code or patterns.
:-) I've lately also been programming in C++, but I have not created
any tags for that since I have been programming C++ under MS-DOS
rather than VMS. :-( Anyway, check the archives. I believe that you
will find something there.

BTW, did I ever offer my GRAB_FILE procedure (it uses a similar
technique)? Put the cursor on a file name, press GOLD-G (or whatever
you choose to bind it to) and that file will be brought into the
current window. I use it mostly from the DCL buffer to grab a file
that was listed by DIRECTORY (it will search upward in the buffer for
the directory name). It may still contain some bugs, but unless
someone else uses it I will probably never discover them. It has been
working well for me. If anyone is interested (and I have not already
posted it :-), I will gladly post it here.

        Paul
