edt emulation

Hi,

I am writing an EDT emulation mode for my JED editor. Before I blindly go
about it, I thought that it would be a good idea to get some feedback from
users of other editors that provide such a mode and see what their comments
and criticisms are.

I will try to emulate the Application keypad functions (right down to the
GOLD key-number to cause repeations). However, there will be some
differences. For example, I do not like the way FIND and SUBS work. I see no
reason to have the user insert the search string into the buffer, only to yank
it back out to the paste buffer destroying what is there. This really sounds
like a kludge to me which I do not want to duplicate. What do EDT users
think?

If you are already using JED on unix and want this new mode, you will have
to get a new version of JED. However, you will have to wait about a week
because I have not released it yet and will not until I get feedback on how
the EDT emulation should behave. (A new executable is needed because the
EDT mode has required a new intrinsic function for the S-Lang language)

Thanks,

I agree, I never liked the EDT-style SUBS function. I prefer the EVE approach,
which acts as a search&replace mode, whichis how I implemented it when
I modified MicroEMACS. Hit GOLD-Enter, type the old_string, hit ENTER, ADV
or BACK, type the new string, then hit ENTER, ADV or BACK again. It then
finds the string and prompts with a Yes, No, All, Quit type of request.

EDT has two other substitute commands besides the strange one that is
bound to GOLD-KPenter. If you use the line-mode "SUBSTITUTE" command
along with the "/QUERY" qualifier you will get exactly the type of
operation that you are talking about. NOKEYPAD substitute takes a
repeat count and operates on the rest of the buffer.

These are fully implemented in my company's commercial EDT+ product
for UNIX.

Agreed. I have been an EDT user for about 10 years now.
(Does that give me extra votes? :-) ) The first thing I did
was redefine Gold/Enter to be the nokeypad mode command

          	"(S/?'Old string: '/?' New string: '/)."

A couple of subtleties worth emulating: Search commands
perform an implicit SELECT (Set Mark) operation on the
search string if it's found, allowing the user to do a CUT
operation on it. Also, the change case (Gold-KP1) command
acts on either select range or, if no select range is
          defined, the current character.
