The truth is, they were not sent there as punishment for criminal
activities. They left to escape whatever horror they felt was worse
than entering the unknown.

The populating of the US would be tantamount to you voluntarily
leaving your snug home today for a possible life on a planet circling
a nearby star. All this because you don't like John Howard or G.W.
Bush or their policies. The colonists leaving for America had no idea
how hard survival would be.

Compare Australia to criminals being sent to the moon and starting a
new country there after being freed but not brought back to earth. The
continent of Australia has a big moat around it to keep those 19th
century criminals away from the rest of the earth's population at the
time. The continent of Australia was not considered habitable by the
early settlers and it looked like a fabulous prison overcrowding
solution.

This comparison is in no way intended to demean the current crop of
Australians who have mingled with all manner of people from every
nation on earth to create this melting pot of people who post here. I
truly find Australians to be honest, open and friendly in daily, face
to face life. The same is not true of the opinionated ingot heads who
argue that blue is red here on wa*.* daily. If only the longest
bloodlines of Australian residents posted here, the dicussion would
probably be about dream time.
