Where in Perth can I get one of those CD cracker/destroyer things?

I've seen these around in years passed. They look like a miniature toasted sandwich maker. You put a data cd that you want to destroy inside, close the lid, and squeeze the handles together and the device cracks the cd. Where can I get one of these in Perth? I've checked one officeworks and one kmart and neither had them, though I'm almost certain when I first saw it it was at one of these places. Cheers, Ari

Set the timmer for 5 seconds. Press start, and admire the skyshow. You can safely discard the CD now in the knowledge that even the CIA can't recover data from it. PS don't blame me if your house burns down. -- Patrick Hamlyn posting from Perth, Western Australia Windsurfing capital of the Southern Hemisphere Moderator: polyforms group (polyforms-subscribe@egroups.com)

We recently had a 'non microwaveable plastic' issue...I think I'll keep looking for the device :-) With the damage to my hands working the wiltshire heavy duty scissors is causing problems with so many old cds and dvds to destroy, and a shredder that handles cds costs a minimum of $369! There are cheaper ones but can't quite remember the name. Its called a Disc ---- , can't remember the second word. Its not shedder but something like that word. If fyou have any links to one then I can find it in my bookmarks which are in the tens of thousands. I have book marks going back to 1993. Ari, Dick Smith has two different shredders that will do the job. Both can accept those 3.5inch diskettes with the metal bits left intact. Shreds them up into the raw atoms from whence they came, it does. I think they're about $100 at the moment. -- Ray

Here's the cheap alternative: 1. Place CD on course concrete (or equivalent) with the metallic face downwards. 2. Place boot on CD. 3. Scuff CD back and forwards a couple of times. 4. Repeat until unreadable 5. Sweep up the metallic fragments and (optionally) dispose of in a separate receptacle to the CD. Seriously, if you are looking for basic CD/DVD/floppy destruction rather than "CIA league" stuff, a pair of budget THREE jaw tin snips are the go....$20 and you're sweet! You will find that the ones with slight serrations on the blades are best. Fibro sheet cutters are great as well. A two hole punch fot $9 fropm OfficeWorks also does a good simple job. o "spodosaurus" <spodosaurus@_yahoo_.com> wrote in message news:43d4885e$1@quokka.wn.com.au... > I've seen these around in years passed. Anyway, the Kensington thing was complete shite, and our paper shredder died (we're still searching for the receipt as it was under warranty) so we went to office works and got one that did cds and paper and had a five year warranty (it's currently $100 off). It works great. The Dick Smith one (also at Tandy) requires you to fold every sheet of paper in order to fit through the narrow slot, and the thought of a thousand paper cuts did not appeal to me. My advice to you of using acetone does work, you know. I've used it for years. It melts the magnetic material from the tape and turns it into brown goo which will, indeed, harden if you leave the cap off of the acetone can when you are finished. >Anyway, the Kensington thing was complete shite, and our paper shredder >died (we're still searching for the receipt as it was under warranty) so >we went to office works and got one that did cds and paper and had a >five year warranty (it's currently $100 off). You opted for the one that had the narrow slot. Too bad. It does take the CDs and floppy disks, though. -- Ray

I actually opted for an Officeworks one on special with a much longer warranty and is a much better shredder (the Mrs will be using it, too, and it's rated for moderate use).
