Perth Tax Agent Wanted Urgently

I am a PAYE taxpayer who has been a rather lazy bad boy. I need to urgently
lodge my 10 personal tax returns from 1996 to 2005 inclusive. I am looking
for a good price on a bulk deal. Any tax agents out there who know their
stuff and who are looking for a bit of work, please contact me on
geoff7772001@yahoo.com.au.

Thanks

Geez they'd have to be desperate for the work. I have a mate like that, too
lazy or stupid to even keep up with his own business. Only mad ppl would
deal with him. Interested to see what will eventually become of him.

As of July 1, ATO will refuse to accept more than 2 year's returns so
it might be a good idea to trot round to your nearest H&R Block office
that is open and surrender. You should be looking for refunds, minus
penalties for late lodgment of course, but should still finish ahead.
Try opening the bidding at $50 per year....

Note the following from the ATO
(http://www.ato.gov.au/individuals/content.asp?doc=/content/23605.htm&page=3&H3)
which may provide some relief:
In most circumstances, [Failure to Lodge on Time] penalty will not be
applied to late lodged Income Tax returns ... where the lodgment results in:

  a.. a refund, or
  b.. a nil result, i.e. neither a debt nor a refund.

You reckon someone 10 years late is owed a refund?

Yeah, it does happen. A guy from work gave me 7 years of papers to pass onto
my dad(ex-ATO worker) and got a few grand worth of refund.

7 is not 10. Someting happens at 7 years to reduce your liability, not sure
exactly what.

Chances are the ATO reduces their liability after 7 years as well.

You are supposed to keep records for 7 years, within 7 years you are
possibly subject to a random audit.

If you are a salary/wage earner, you should be looking at refunds of
around $500 a year up to 2003, a bit less each year thereafter as the
tax rates dropped. If you get the fee taken from the refund you should
still get monery back - better in your bank than the ATOs. You won't
find out if you don't ask!
5 years is now accepted as the limit to keep records, unless you are
in business.

I mean... if you were due a refund (of any magnitude) would you wait 10
years to do a return to claim it?

Look up 'shorter period of review' on the ato website

You have no idea what you are talking about. The "shorter period" refers
to the "standard" period they will audit people with very simple tax
affairs. They reserve the right to go back more than this if they find
fraud, etc.

You have stated the ATO will not let you lodge more than 2 years of past
tax returns. This is total crap.

Do you have a basis for knowing that?

Yes, but the OP was talking about unlodged returns, not tax records.

Patrick mentioned 7 years as a significant time, but wasn't sure what the
significance was. Try to keep up.

Yep. I know a good who works at my work, he hasnt done his tax in 7 yrs and
due to the nature of his work would be due refunds for every single year

Maybe. I know some who haven't done a lot of BAS's because it's "too hard"
but mostly because they couldn't pay it - they spent the money. When annual
tax time comes they might be owed a refund on paper, but they owe the ATO
for all the BAS's, including all the GST. Unless the refund is more than the
GST owing, they find it more attractive to just hope the problem will go
away. Don't know if you have to pay the PAYG first, to get any refund owing.

Don't know about you, but I spend roughly a week of evenings to prepare my
annual tax return. I'd imagine for a lot of taxpayers, it's all too much
trouble.

My BAS's are virtually a printout, but for what I pay an accountant for each
annual return, I would work about 10 hours. Jobs would run later by the
amount of time I spent on tax, but also he will always find more deductions
than I can. Same would be true for most contractor types or business owners.
If it's too much trouble it would be because they keep sloppy records.

That's right. Business owners should be keeping their ledgers up to date
every day or week instead of once a year.

I still believe that's not the main reason for failure to lodge returns
though - they spend the GST & PAYG (to live) and when 30th June comes
they're in the shit with tax already so they leave it.
