As I understand it, there is an enhanced AT command set known as AT+Voice. This command set allows the modem to record/play compressed sound and detect/generate DTMF tones. As I see it, AT+Voice will lead to much more than "sophisticated answering machines." When combined with text-to-speech (and someday voice-recognition) it will enable any (touch-tone) phone to become your own Personal Digital Assistant. :-) Grandiose claims aside, with these new modems, it will be a simple matter of programming to build hardware-inexpensive order-entry and information delivery systems. Please contact me If you are interested in the future of these modems, and the software that will drive them. I would like to see some simple public domain software that uses these new features. One particular application of AT+Voice that interests me would be a number you could dial to find out about government: who are my elected representatives, who are their biggest campaign contibutors, what legislation is being voted on this week, etc. Another Message in the Bottle from Robert DeBenedictis (617) 426-8430
