Man, 30, wounded in North End shooting

By DAVID SCHMEICHEL, STAFF REPORTER

A 30-year-old man was recovering in hospital yesterday morning
following a shooting with possible gang ties at a house in the North
End. The man was shot while inside a house on McKenzie Street near
Dufferin Avenue shortly after 7 a.m., police reported.

He was taken to Health Sciences Centre suffering from at least one
gunshot wound to the abdomen, cops said. He was listed in stable
condition yesterday.

The Winnipeg Police Service's gang unit was called to assist in the
investigation, and Insp. Boyd Campbell said yesterday the shooting may
have had gang connections.

Police wouldn't elaborate on what those connections might be,
confirming only that they had a suspect in mind. No arrests had been
made by press time last night.

Many of the houses surrounding the scene of the shooting appear to be
abandoned, and have boarded-up windows and "condemned" signs.

HIGH-TRAFFIC SPOT

One area resident, who asked not to be named, said the site is a
high-traffic spot.

"They always had (people) going in and out of there, and you could see
hookers going in there every now and then," said the woman. "Obviously
they were probably doing drugs in there, or at least that's how I'd
put two and two together."

The woman said she didn't actually hear the shooting, but wasn't
surprised to learn violence had broken out at the house.

The shooting is the city's third in just four days.

On Friday morning, Hells Angels member William (Billy) Bowden was
hospitalized with gunshot wounds to his lower body after a shootout at
a bar on Corydon Avenue.

The 25-year-old man suspected of shooting Bowden was also hospitalized
with gunshot wounds to his torso. (Apparently a man with Bowden
returned fire).

And late Thursday night, cops were called to the corner of Edison
Avenue and Rothesay Street in North Kildonan, after a man in a Honda
fired a shot at a pedestrian, hitting him in the back and causing
non-life threatening injuries.
