ETHICS 101 and LAW 102 1. taking a newspaper from a coffee shop 2. taking a loonie coin $1 if found on the floor of a A) floor in a shopping mall B) floor within an actual store in a mall . Thank god Norm isn't posting any more or we'd get all kinds of theoretical yimmer yam from him. More below. But not much more..I'm tired. ** <my_home@mts.net> wrote in message news:3c6causoges51n95v8a80ntndou7n2p1k2@4ax.com... > > > I saw someone buy the copy and then leave it there. > >So I picked it up and took the page. > > so you stole from the rightfull owner even though they were not there > and are seemingly proud of it. * No. The rightful owner left the paper there as he was finished with it. I merely picked it up and cut out the page with my letter to the editor and put the paper back on the table. Honest as Abe. Proud? As a pay' co*ck. ** > This would be something along the same lines as you leaving the Fiat > parked on the street and someone borrowed it, newspaper or car it's > still theft... ** No ....its not the same...although it could be stretched in the most bizarre way perhaps. The newspaper is an inexpensive consumable item which has a temporary value and is discarded as trash almost as soon as it is read. In this case, the original owner read the paper and had gotten his value from the paper and had simply discarded it as waste on the table to be picked up by the waitress as garbage. it was left as a free for all. I merely picked it up, like one would pick up some other discarded item and read it and took one page from it. That is not shoplifting or theft. My car, is not a consumbale item and it would have been locked when left on the street. No reasonable person would think that the car was available to be taken. If they broke in, then that would definately be theft. If the car was open and they had to hotwire it..then that was theft. IF the car was open and the key was left in it, it would still be theft. One must look at what a "reasonable" expectation would be for a discarded newspaper or a car on the street. ** > > > >So legal as beagle. > > theft > > > >it wasn't the stores copy so it wasn't shoplifting. > > theft > > > >But here is a related question.... > > >1. if you find a penny on the floor in the Bay. Again, if i found a dime on the floor in a shopping center mall or a store and took it...would that be shoplifting? Usually I ignore it..if it was a loonie in the mall...YES I would keep it. If it was a loonie in the STORE...I probably would not take it as I would think that it was probably a setup by store security. So no..I don't think its shop lifting to take a dollar from the floor of a store...unless it was on the side of the cash register. I'm pretty sure that the Post office does that with its workers to see if they will steal stamps from within as I heard that they often do that by sending actual currency thru the mail to see if staff would take it..and then be fired.
