Just had an incredible evening... Tim Leary spoke at Holy Cross, here in lovely Worcester MA. Sure he was 2hrs late, but so what, it was well worth the wait. The man is awesome. He has got to be the most upbeat, intelligent person I've seen. And listening to him you find it hard to believe he is 73... It was great. He talked for ~1-1/2 hrs, talking about the information age. And using technology to reprogram your brain. The value of video games and self-selection of images. The need for iconographic language to remove the barriers to world communication. The man really has his shit together. And then a few (5-6) of us decided to follow Tim to the pub in the basement. It was fucking fantastic. An hour spent talking to Tim about computers, video, the networks, drugs, law, etc. Just like a couple of friends, kicking back with some beer. Yes I'm hyped. All the stuff I've heard/read about him, his history, ideas, etc are nothing compared to a few hours listening to him and talking with him. He never steps back from the leading edge. He has a company, Futique, which is the opposite of Antique, which is looking into producing interactive CD-Roms for modifying your mind. He is really into interactive technology and computers now. And he's right there, working on tommorrow. He really is impressive. All in all a great way to spend an evening. See him if you get the chance. He travels about giving talks from time to time. ############################################################################### # I have one prejudice, and that is against stupidity. I too, have to admire the man-he has stayed on the EDGE for years and
has evolved as it has...

I saw him in Champaign-Urbana about 2 years ago and he was on that technology kick then. I knew some guys who went and hung out with him after he talked and I heard he said that all of his previous work (the Book of the Dead stuff recently posted) was "all a bunch of shit". I admire the dude a little, but when he goes back and looks at stuff he thought of and believed in in the past and calls it "a bunch of shit" I dunno. But he is probably the coolest 73 year old out there though! Hint of the week: For the few of you that haven't read it yet, check out "The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test" by Tom Wolfe -- good book.

you would rather someone stagnate than grow?
Or is it just that you desire heros or some such bullshit to look up to and
they're supposed to be 'constant'?
...I think I need to check out of this reality for a while and come back when
things get a bit more meaningful...
joe, feeling a bit peeved that he had to WORK instead of asking tim for a
chat...

Maybe y'all should read some of Leary's old "shit" and then come
back and tell us how you believe every word.....
I find it amusing to collect, barely tolerable to read, but if he
really took it all seriously now I'd be really worried about his
sanity. There are gems in parts, but there are just as many
clinkers.
You can't fault him for being creative though.

This seems a little harsh... Well, I'm all for growing, but do you think that if you were listening to him tell all about microchips in your brain that're gonna allow you to "telepathically" communicate to people with similar chips that you would believe that *he* actually believes it? (sorry, long sentence, I hope you see my point) To me, there *does* come a time where you sort of have to take a stand on things. Next year Leary'll probably say that microchips in the brain is a bunch of shit (which it is). I don't desire "heroes or some such bullshit" buddy, I don't know how you extracted that from my post... Like I said, I admire the guy too; 'cause he's "seen" some shit (I believe) that I'll never experience. I suppose all the "open-minded" people out there would like no one to ever have an opinion (a sign of close-mindedness) and to accept all viewpoints on a topic (to deny that one view might be wrong or inappropriate would be close-minded). Sorry, you can flame me for that, I am getting a little carried away...or maybe I wasn't...or maybe I was...no, I definitely wasn't...yes, I was...Acceptance .

He's right. During the 60's, when everyone else was having fun, Leary was trying to look like some kind of big shot by pretending the events of the time (the drug culture) actually had substance. He was a pretentious paranoid goober. Perhaps the best account of the era was by Tom Wolf in "The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test". While most fun-loving people were out having a good time (like Ken Kesey), Leary was, I don't know, like the drunk at the party who has cornered you into a serious conversation. Wolf revealed Leary for who he really was/is. Most people know very little, if anything factual about the guy, and when they do get to know him, they are supremely disappointed, because he just doesnt live up to the hype and/or legend that has preceded him. -- farley@access.digex.com <Charles U. THE Tim Leary (sorta famous, involved with acid in the 60s, offworld migration, served time, etc) is alive and well. Looking very healthy for someone born in 1920, still alert and energetic... And he still enjoys relaxing with a beer... ############################################################################### # I have one prejudice, and that is against stupidity. Timothy Leary is alive and well and living in California (as always). Abbie Hoffman (another, but quite different, figure from the '60s) was found dead in his New Hope, PA home in '88(?). Apparently a suicide. -wjr-

Apparently a suicide. Thanks for the info. Must have been a combination of Abbie Hoffman's death (I had the place and circumstances right, just the wrong person) and that song about Timothy Leary that caused the confusion. I'm off to the library to see what he's written lately. People tend to drop off my reading list when they die, ya know.
