A few weeks ago, I posted a warning to people who might be contem- plating buying a computer from a mailorder firm called Royal Computers, Inc., from City of Industry, CA. They advertise heavily in computer periodicals. In my original post, I told the horror story of my experience with them -- ordering one of their machines, having it arrive D.O.A., and then, despite their advertised claims of "Free Lifetime Technical Support," being unable to get ANY RESPONSE WHAT- SOEVER from their Technical Support line. I placed over 40 calls in a period of a week before anyone called me back. When they did, the support rep made no attempt to suggest a fix for the problem nor offer me a replacement machine. I asked for, and got, a Return Merchandise Authorization, and sent the machine back, followed up by several certified letters and phone calls to determine whether/when they received it and when they would return my money. Legally, the company is supposed reply to all such queries and to process refunds within 15 days of receiving the returned merchandise. Well, this is just to let potential buyers know that Royal Computers 1) never answered _any_ of my phone calls or certified letters, 2) refused to talk to me on the phone, 3) refused to talk to my attorney on the phone, and 4) NEVER ISSUED THE REFUND!!! They finally had to be FORCED to issue my refund by the credit card company, which, as I understand, has since dropped Royal Computers as a customer! So if you find their ads in Computer Shopper or other publications flashy and their prices attractive (they are), consider this story before plunking your cash down... B. Wright, President Ronin Systems, Inc. Marblehead, MA
