: >Can someone suggest a couple of alternatives to allow complete access to the : >net for all the machines. I don't know the complete details yet, but I : >assume all the machines will be on some sort of Lan. : Steve, : One option is a product called "Instant Internet" manufactured by : Performance Technology. It is a box that you attach to your : Novell/Windows LAN that allows everyone on the LAN to make a TCP/IP : connection to an Internet provider. It supposedly takes only 15 : minutes to install. After installation, all you need to do is put : your winsock applications on each workstation that needs access. A : 28,800 modem is built into the Instant Internet, but you can plug in : an external ISDN terminal adapter if you want to go that route. : The box retails at about $3500. One local distributer is Computer : Networking Group, Inc. One of their sales people is Alan Casas. His : phone number is (312) 226-0495 ext. 22. I talked to them at the : recent Windows World expo. : To learn more, there is an article in the July 1995 issue of "Byte" : titled "Short-Order Internet Access" (p. 139) which reviews Instant : Internet and one other product. : How did you get all those Dell's donated? As an option to "Instant Internet" you can get a Novell product Unixware which is Novell's version of UNIX. It only costs $425 and is basically self-installing. The great thing about it, is that it works with your existing netware system and can be connected to your ISP via SLIP/PPP(dial-up) or via leased line as well. This can be run on a higher end 386(which I dont recommend) but even with a high-end 486 you are going to spend a lot less than $3500 for a simple UNIX server.
