Judge sentences wife-killer

TORRANCE, Oct. 30 - A judge imposed a 28 years-to-life prison term Friday on
a man who savagely beat his wife with a large flashlight, strangled her and
dragged her body behind a van after a fight over his failure to do house
chores or get a job.
         A jury convicted Jude Nwandu, 46, of Inglewood, Oct. 16 of
first-degree murder and evading police in the Sept. 13, 1996, killing. Judge
Francis Hourigan sentenced him during a brief hearing in Torrance Superior
Court.
    According to trial testimony, Nwandu used rope and telephone cord to tie
Georginia Nwandu�s body to the back bumper of his minivan, said Deputy
District Attorney Ron Geltz.
    The prosecutor said Nwandu had been unable to get the body in the van.
    Nwandu lived with his wife and their children in an apartment at 221 W.
Buckthorn St. He drove about a mile with the 37-year-old woman�s corpse tied
to the bumper before police spotted him, Geltz said.
    The killer then tried to elude the officers, and was chased about a
mile- and-a-half through Inglewood before crashing into a parked car near
Larch Street and La Brea Avenue.
    The Nwandus� 14-year-old daughter, who heard her mother choking the
night she was killed, testified that her parents had been arguing. She said
her mother wanted the unemployed man to get a job and to help out around the
house, Geltz said.
