have you tried a general purpose DVD-R in that drive? I got the pioneer A03 drive (the same, i think) and it always asks to "format" the disk when i put it in (a blank cd or dvd). Just ignore that and start burning, maybe? or can you not ignore it? i'm new to this thing too - just got the drive this last weekend.
