Supreme court upholds defamation sentence

A Saskatoon couple who paraded in front of a police station with placards
that maliciously defamed a police officer deserved to go to jail, the
Supreme Court of Canada ruled Thursday.

In upholding the constitutionality of the law of criminal defamation, the
court said the need to stop people from causing unfair harm to the
reputation of others is far more important in such cases than the right to
free speech.

"The protection of an individual from willful and false attack recognizes
both the innate dignity of the individual and the integral link between
reputation and the fruitful participation of an individual in Canadian
society," the court said.
