It's an easy and quick way to produce Windows apps that work. It does have limitations, such as no inheritence, callback etc, but it is possible to write reasonable object oriented components, and learn about the underlying principles involved. If one gets to understand the implications of VB's limitations, then one is in a good position to move up to C++ and undergo the pain involved in active template library, MFC etc.
