Hi all,

having built desktop-applications for windows with Omnis for many years we
are considering now whether we should move our application from Omnis 7 to
Omnis Studio or whether we should write everything new from the scratch.

The candidates are Visual Basic, Power Builder, Delphi and Centura.
Important for us is that it is possible to write applications fast und to
have the possibility to write a web interface as well.

We have done a pilot project with Visual Basic using a 3-tier architecture
so it is possible to replace the VB user Interface by a web interface with
ASP. This went o.k. so far although we where not as fast as expected. The
big problem howewer is the distribution of the programm, the dll-hell....
What if another Installation-programm replaces our dlls?

Does anybody know how the other tools behave?

Is application development with Delphi really so much faster? Is it true
that Delphi Com-Objects are in the .exe file not in a .dll? What about the
Inprise Kyrix-Project? Does it mean that programms writen for Windows can be
used with Linux as well?

What about PowerBuilder? Is it better than Visual Basic? In what respect?
There will be an Linux-Version in the future I guess.

Is Centura an option today? Or have they missed the new developments?
Perhaps not - at least there is some possibility to write web-applications.
Centura is strictly limited to the windows operating system - is that true?

Maybe some words about Omnis Studio (www.omnis-software.com): This is a
multiplatform, object oriented RAD-Tool. It is really fast and very
intuitive. The only disadvantage: Runtime-fees, no compiled versions and
most critical the company is not in a very good condition. Although these
might be change in the future because there is a Linux Version on the market
now and Omnis Studio seems to be the only true RAD-Tool for Linus at the
moment. And they made it to the Nasdaq, finally.

Thanks in advance for your help
