I went through a wierd (but necessary) sequence of operations that resulted in this error: 

(done on an new Win2K Server installation, PIII 700MHz with 256MB RAM) - installed Reader 5 on C: - uninstalled Reader 5 - installed Reader 5 on D: - rebooted - installed Reader 3 on D: - uninstalled both 3 and 5 - rebooted - installed Reader 5 on D: 

The only thing I haven't tried yet is a reboot AFTER the final install of 5, as the discussion suggests. 

Any more ideas welcome.
