Thanks for the response Claudio.  My problems occur for PDF files from different sources.  I suppose I can start by finding out exactly how one of the offending PDF files was created, but it seems to me that for many PDF files from archives, this will be difficult.  I will also follow your suggestion to check pagemakersupport.  I have searched this user forum for similar problems to mine and found a lot of unrelated issues. How does one contact Adobe about a Reader issue?
