The voice of common sense at last! I could not agree with you more, and would also like to add that Normalizing - in addition to not doing what people think it does - also adds another layer of DSP pprocessing, complete with all the rounding errors and resultant quantization distortion too, so it will often make things worse.
It is almost as awful as MP3 encoding - another process that should be banned!
