Grandpa Broon, I don't frequent this forum as much as I should but I use Audition on a daily basis as it's the template of my job (ontop of my own talent of course). So heres hoping I can give you a quick answer to a buggish problem which I have experienced in similar scenarios: To me it sounds like your system is tasked, make sure you have lots of RAM or make sure something strange isn't happening with your system. Loading large files is quite tasking especially if Audition is attempting to convert them to 32 bit. With that being said check the settings in Audition to make sure that it isn't trying to convert the mpeg into 32 bit. If it is and you have an appropriate soundcard for this and lots of RAM (more than 256) I really think you'll end up reinstalling to rid yourself of this problem.
