I've tried experimenting with some noise shaping when dithering down in bit rate alone (32 bit down to 16 bit) and am having a hard time telling up from down. Meaning, I can hear a difference in a slight white noise-esuqe type of quality but im not exactly sure what im listening and at which point it takes affect on the mixdown. For instance I may have a Bossa Nova composed of 20 tracks. Im recording at a 32 bit, 44,100 resolution. I've mixed and mixed down to a stereo 32 bit, 44,100 wave file. I save this file. I now Conver Sample Type to 16 bit, 44,100 and select noise shaping "a". I go back to my original 32 bit, 44,100 and conver sameple type again but this time using noise shaping "b". I will do this several time until I have the original file dithered down four different times with different noise shaping settings. The difference is only audible when the system is CRANKED at low decibel level passages (i.e. a quiet intro or pause in the music). When I examine/compare the waves on a frequency analysis alone I see no major difference: same lows, same mids, same highgs. Am I missing something? How can I better use this feature built into Audition, I have read the help file and understand that depending on the style and individual track different types of noise shaping will work better but I can barely understand the benefits of using noise shaping. Timothy.
