Normalising should be banned - it doesn't necessarily make things sound like they're at the same volume, even if the peak or RMS levels are the same. Our ears are very non-linear and it isn't easy for software to automatically work out how loud something will sound to the human ear. That's why we still need mastering engineers who will listen to all the tracks on a compilation and tweak levels, compression and eq until they all fit together. Mastering engineers rarely use normalising although they will often use a little hard limiting. Cheers. James.
