Stupid beginners question

I have what is probably a very dumb question. I'm using Audobe Audition 1.0. I used it a few times when I first got it a while ago, then didn't have time to use it for the last 6 months or so. I started it up today and loaded a Wav file and discovered in the "edit" screen the "stop", "play", "pause", "play to end" and "play looped" buttons are all greyed out. In order to listen to the file I have to go to the multitrack view. I can't figure this out. The last time I used the program I was able to play and edit in the edit screen. I tried loading MP3 and WMA files and the same thing happened. Can anyone help me out? I've looked throught the manual and in the help topics and can't find this mentioned. Thanks for any help.
