Does Audtion 1.0 work with EZ Drummer?

EZ drummer looks very cool, but I'm hesitant to buy it if it is not compatible. Has anyone tried it? It says: EZDrummer is a virtual instrument that needs a ๏ฟฝhost๏ฟฝ program, so if you have something that works with VST, Audio Units or RTAS, you are in business. I can only find reference to DirectX plug-ins.

Not only that, but EZDrummer requires MIDI edit support, which 1.0 doesn't have.

Thanks dstdean. It looks like I'll have to upgrade if I want to use it. There are a lot of audio editors that are compatible according to their list, Audition not one of them. Does anyone have an opinion which one of those in the list is going to be the best editor?

I just upgraded to AA3.0.1 and haven't tried EZD with it yet, so I have to pass on that. There are some folks on the forum (Runaway being one, I believe) that do use EZD with AA3 and maybe they can give you some help/advice. I have used EZD with Reaper, Cubase, and Sonar. Out of the three, Sonar had, **for me**, the most intuitive and easiest interface for EZD - HOWEVER, neither Cubase or Sonar's audio handling capabilities could hold a candle to AA. --Dean

Hey Dean, Yes I use EZ drummer as a vst with AA3 and it works fine. However, I can only get at most a stereo mix (I haven't really explored rewire mode but I doubt if that will do better.). Also I have to setup a feedback loop on my RME FF800 to route the signal back into AA. So you may have some difficulty if your hardware doesnt allow such routing. Having said that it would be GREAT if AA could recognise say 8 channels of input from EZ Drummer. EZ Drummer works well (8 inputs) with Cubase but I hate Cubase with a passion and as Dean says ain't nothing with AA's audio capabilities. PS Does the DST stand for Down South Texas?

Good guess, as that is my location, but it is actually an abbreviation for the oilfield term "drill stem test" - something that I did (and still advise on) for a good part of my "paycheck" career.

Thanks for your info Runaway. Knowing that version 3 can use the plug-in, I checked for upgrades from 1.0 and found they will now upgrade from any version of Audition for $99. Nice... and done.

PitchPocket make note of my previous caveat "I have to setup a feedback loop on my RME FF800 to route the signal back into AA" I'm not sure how you go if your setup doesn't allow for this feedback loop

I guess I didn't understand what you meant. So you can't drag and drop the various sound files onto the multi track as advertised? If not, what do you think is the best audio editor that will function properly with EZD? I have only used Cool Edit and Adobe 1.0 so don't know the others. A guy on youtube is using Logic Pro with it, but that is apparently Mac only.

Well PC based people would probably been using ProTools, Cubase or Sonar. My preference would be the last. But these are Sequencer type softwares rather than the audio editor that Audition is.

Yeah, I'm beginning to get that. I've been looking at all the compatible applications and they are all sequencer type software.

Hmmm?
Well until now I have never dragged and dropped any of ez drummers grooves onto a midi track. But yes I have tried it and you can do that. But that just seems to me to be the same as creating a midi track opening up EZ Drummer as a vst selecting a groove and pressing play? I guess they are the same thing?
The point I was emphasising was that when you press play AA will send those drums (the sound of them) out where ever you point it (eg master or a specific output channel).
If I set it to say [14M] Adat 2(1)] on my rig then that's where it will go. For me to record that in AA (and maybe there is another way?) I need to set my RME FF800 to loop that output back in on another channel or the same one so that I can set AA to record that input - if that makes any sense?
If you hardware/software setupo doesn't allow such a thing (and a lot do) you may only be able to hear but not be able to record EZ Drummer's output.
I'm happy to be educated if there is another way of doing this.

I was able to drop EZD grooves into a MIDI track in AA3.0.1, set the 'Sequencer' to Dfh Sampler, hit play and have the Stereo drum track play back properly through the RME HDSP 9652 (which has no loopback function). I have not tried it with the FF800, but will do that today and report back. One thing that I did try without success was to use the multi-channel output of the sampler. I will work more with that also. --Dean

Runaway, I just re-read your post and thought about this:
For me to record that in AA (and maybe there is another way?) I need to
set my RME FF800 to loop that output back in on another channel or the
same one so that I can set AA to record that input - if that makes any
sense?
I did not try to record (or mixdown) the output in my brief experiment. Obviously I will put that on today's short list.....

I was able to get a mixdown in AA3.0.1 without using loopback on the external interface (FF800) by highlighting the whole section of the MT session that I wanted to mixdown, then choosing "Mixdown Master" (or whatever it's called). This created a stereo WAV of the MIDI tracks. Further discussion of this should most likely be moved to the AA3 forum. --Dean

thanks again Dean. I'll get my upgrade and if I have more questions, I'll post to AA3 forum. Steve

This is certainly one way to do it - especially if you are unlucky enough to not have an RME FF800. I tend to record small sections of drum bits in wav and then comp them together so the feedback loop method works best for me. This knowledge is certainly good for others - well done Dean. Yes this discussion now belongs elsewhere.
