Cool Edit Pro with Windows Vista -- Muting built-in mic

I realize that CEP 2.1 wasn't designed for Windows Vista, but I'm still able to use it and would rather not purchase Audition if I don't have to.

Here's the problem I'm running into:
Let's say I want to record sound from Internet Explorer into Cool Edit. It will do it, but it also records sound from the built-in microphone on my computer. I cannot for the life of me figure out how to mute this mic.

If I open up "recording devices" on my computer, the only option is microphone. If I disable that, then I can't record anything at all in CEP.

With XP, I could open the Windows Recording Mixer and mute the microphone without any problem, but I can't figure out how to do that with Vista.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sadly, that doesn't help. I've clicked to show disabled and disconnected devices, and the only thing that shows up is the microphone still.

That means that the hardware/Vista combination on your machine is, to use a technical term, broken. Or at least won't do what you expect.
It would perhaps be useful to others to know the make and model of machine.

Audition will most likely behave the same unless it's a really non-standard soundcard. Installing some sort of proper audio interface might be the way to go, but would require some research and maybe a loopback cable to loop line-out to line-in.
