Thanks for the additional detail. A couple of things...

Do you have have current drivers for your printer and scanner? If you are using the TWAIN interface with Photoshop, see what happens if you disable it -- locate the component and put a tilde (~) in front of its name. Use the hardware's software to scan directly. Some hardware developers do not implement the TWAIN standard correctly and that can adverserly affect Photoshop.

I create custom murals and wallpaper- so some files are 20ft x 20ft, 300dpi

Aaarrrggghhhh! You rarely if ever need 300 ppi (not dpi) for murals as they are not viewed from normal reading distance. 25 ppi-75 ppi should be more than sufficient. That said, for files that are "huge" (say, >500 MB), you should have a lot more than 2 GB RAM. And you really need a large separate fast drive dedicated for scratch disk space.

I have no duplicate fonts, not sure how to check if they are damaged.

How do you know for sure you have no dupes? A good font manager, such as FontAgent Pro can ferret out both the dupes and corrupted fonts.

Additional thoughts...Have you run DiskWarrior? Repaired permissions? Reset Photoshop preferences?
