I have been searching the forums and Google for info on using migration assistant to migrate to a new Mac, both of which are running Leopard. The info has been all over the place with some saying do a fresh install on the new machine and others saying I don't need to. Some saying deactivate on the old machine first, or uninstall first on the old machine. All of the posts were quite old.

I don't mind doing a fresh install on the new machine if I have to, but I would like to at least be able to somehow migrate or move my preferences and plugins and such.

I also will be migrating Lightroom 2, and assume the same procedures will apply to it.

Does anyone have any definitive advice on the right way to do this?

I can speak about the Creative Suite, I can't speak about Lightroom (ask in the Lightroom forum).

I recommend that you deactivate the Suite on the old computer first. Then do a fresh install on the new computer. Then do any necessary updates with the Adobe updater application.

Adobe software (especially the Suite) is much too complex to trust Migration Assistant to move everything. It's a bit of a pain, but my experience is that the extra time at the beginning is work various problems that might occur later.

However, Migration Assistant works well with moving almost any other software.

As tempting as using Migration Assistant is, I'd sooner spend the extra time and install fresh from the original discs. If there was any application corruption or if there are bad preferences, you'll simply be copying over the bad code.

But I'd say that it is safe to copy your document files over that way.

give it a shot it may work perfectly, if it does you've saved yourself some time. If things are not working well uninstall and reinstall. I would migrate CS3 as many have reported problems installing and updating CS3 in Leopard.
