Here's what I need to do: I have three computers - iMac, PowerMac and Mac Pro. I know that I can only install Creative Suite on two of them. I have CS3 running on the Mac Pro and the iMac and CS1 on the PowerMac. I recently bought CS4. I installed it on the Mac Pro. Now I want to install CS4 on the PowerMac. I need to know if that can be done by uninstalling CS3 from the iMac, installing it on the PowerMac, then upgrading the PowerMac to CS4. Or, can I skip installing CS3 on the PowerMac and go directly from CS1 to CS4?

Correction: You CAN install CS4 on more than two computers. But you can only ACTIVATE two computers at a time. However, if you switch activation too many times, you may have to call Adobe and explain why.

If these are upgrades you can't legally do this anyway. You only have a CS4 license and you split the installations up that way. Bob

Thanks Bob & Steve. Wow. I miss the old days. I bought my first copy of Illustrator (Illustrator 88) on a floppy disk. I would get a new computer or add a computer and I would just install it and use it. I have been a loyal Adobe customer ever since. But now they are so paranoid with their licensing it has been a struggle (starting around the AI 10 - CS1 days?). I don't know what I can and can't do, what I can and can't use, what upgrades I qualify for, which ones I don't. I just want to use the software. I have jobs that need to get done. Pardon my rant, but I just got through with a nightmare customer service problem with Adobe that took 8 weeks to resolve, now this. If anyone can tell me in plain, every day language the steps I need to take to get done what I need to get done, that would be so wonderful and I would be eternally grateful. I am not trying to do anything illegal.

Again...if you're upgrading you can't be using three computers. That's simple and it sounds like that's what you've been doing. So figure our which one you don't need and install the software on the other two in the order in which they were released...CS, CS3, then CS4 if you want them all. If not, just install CS4 and have the serial number from CS3 and the disks handy. Bob

And another thing...those two machines cannot be used at the same time which also sounds like something you've been doing. You have ONE LICENSE which can be used on two machines but the purpose of that is to allow for a home machine and work machine or a laptop. What it clearly is not for is for using two machines at the same time. Bob

"...the purpose of that is to allow for a home machine and work machine or a laptop." That is exactly what I'm doing. Thanks for the replies.

Norris,
"...the purpose of that is to allow for a home machine and work machine
or a laptop."
The key word left out here is "nonsimultaneous". One license. One computer at a time.
This is nothing new, either with Adobe or other single-user licensed software. Even your old Illustrator could not be used simultaneously on more than one machine unless you had a site license or multiple-seat license or similar.
Also, if you need to split up your apps, you don't buy the Creative Suite, as it is treated as if a single multipart application as far as licensing is concerned You buy the individual applications. But that costs more money.
I hope this helps clarify the issue.
Neil
