Export to PDF produces ghost text vs Distiller

CS3, Tiger. We Export to a 1.3 PDF from InDesign CS3. We repurpose these to SWF files for eBooks. We are seeing Ghost text -- looks like an offset duplication of text.

It's happening when we place an Illustrator CS3 file into InDesign that has text on the 2nd from the top layer (top layer is turned OFF). Very annying, as I would think Export to PDF would be the way to go. To fix this, we have to use PitStop's "remove invisible data" command. (the extra data is visible within PitStop, and even Acrobat when "select all" is selected.

When we Distill the files, we don't get this problem. What is the purpose of these duplicated regions that mess up our conversion to SWF? We have to have text in the Illustrator file for various workflow reasons.

Why would you use 1.3 for web applications? Export using the smallest
file setting which defaults to 1.4.

We need one PDF that is multi-purpose. But, we are finding out that there may be a problem with the Press-Ready PDF settings we have modified, which produces this invisible data that is causing the problem.

You can't have your cake and eat it, too. In fact, any workflow that
still calls for flattened or distilled PDFs can't be called anything but
archaic at this point.

Yes, I am quite aware of legacy workflows.

Anyway, regarding the above problem. We discovered that an inside bleed caused the ghosting/invisible data problem with direct export to PDF from InDesign.

However, the eBook people are still requesting a 1.3 PDF. But seems we can direct export from InDesign, at least.

Kathy,

For future reference you may be able to remove invisible text by
redaction. After redacting a graphic or text, Acrobat gives the option
of removing all invisible text, cropped areas and such. Very handy.
