Our studio is losing a lot of time and work due to Version Cue CS4's quirks. Here are some more bizarre issues.... We had a MS PowerPoint job for a client, and the PowerPoint file (checked in to Version Cue CS4) would simply not update on one of the Vista workstations. Worse yet, Bridge CS4 showed the file as "up to date" with the proper version #!!! On one workstation, a designer checked in version 8. On the other workstation, version 8 showed as the "up to date" version, but upon opening the PowerPoint file, it was AN EARLIER VERSION!!! And there was no warning. Had our designer not noticed that this file was older, she would have worked on and saved an OLDER VERSION on top of Version Cue CS4!!! Even now, we cannot get this other workstation to load the correct file (we rebooted the system, refreshed, purged the cache, etc...) Now we doubt what version is actually on the Version Cue CS4 server! We've noticed this happening on other files in the past, but only recently had time to investigate this behavior more. I cannot underestimate how harmful Version Cue CS4 is to Adobe users and working design studios. Again I'm aghast at how Adobe is silent on any patches or updates let alone releasing it for installation in this condition. During this time we also noticed that there ARE NO LOCAL COPIES of any of the files on the workstations. There are only .info files in the Adobe Drive Cache folder. What does this mean? If a user is working on a Version Cue CS4 file and does not CHECK IN (i.e., just saves the file) this information is NOT saved in any usable format and cannot be restored from nightly backups (because theyre saved as random .info files in Version Cue CS4). So if your users have a need to restore a backup before sending the latest changes to the server, with Version Cue CS4, they are OUT OF LUCK. Adobe really F*CKED UP Version Cue with CS4. They should have left Version Cue CS3 as is. They should have at least manned-up enough to NOT RELEASE IT or WARN its users about how BAD it is. Its hardly believable that 5 months later, there are no patches, and no apologies. I tried to call Adobe to ask if a patch is coming soon, but all I got was a run-around India with no resolution (giving our customer number out to countless operatorscant they pass that information on to the next xfer??). Our studio can no longer wait for Adobe: were switching to Subversion. Version Cue CS4 is an EPIC FAILURE.

Epic failure is correct. It's amazing really, considering the fact that the component aps are so good. How about it Adobe, what are your plans for this? Do I abandon Version Cue and try to get Subversion to work, or are you working on a fix.

This is a User to User forum. It is not Adobe Technical Support. It is not Adobe Product Management. It is simply other users of the products who may or may not be able to assist you with technical issues. So, if you think you are communicating with Adobe's management team with regards to dissatisfaction with the product and/or updates and fixes, you are dead wrong. - Dov

Dov A lot of companies use the mantra that the customer is always right not "dead wrong". I'm guessing you think your revised help system is pretty intuitive. And that I should have noticed when I the path that started with the help button took me out of help and into the user to user forum. Wanna see my case numbers? I'm not getting a lot of love from technical support either. If you want to point me to a link that lets me know what's on the horizon with Version Cue, I'd find that really helpful.

Thom, (1) I personally don't think that the help system is pretty intuitive (it isn't "mine" in any sense - I don't work on the Creative Suite team at all). (2) I would not agree that pointing users to these forums from Adobe's help system as a primary source of help and support. (3) I certainly believe you about what you either did or didn't get in terms of assistance from Adobe Technical Support. (4) Adobe does not publish information about future product releases prior to their official public announcement and/or imminent release. Personally, I have no idea what is "on the horizon with Version Cue." My point, quite simply, was that rants on these forums will not get to the folks you want to influence at Adobe. They do not frequent these forums. - Dov

I think these rants are helpful in warning users not to use Version Cue CS4--Adobe sure didn't.

Jon, I'm afraid you are correct in understanding the risk of saving files from non-Adobe-Drive-aware applications without explicitly following that with a check-in command. The reasons for this, and instructions on how to recover data which may appear to be lost when it happens, can be found in this KowledgeBase document I authored when CS4 shipped: <http://www.adobe.com/go/kb404970> I truly care about how this affects customers and have worked very hard to mitigate the limitations of this workflow the best I can. Sincerely, Matthew
