Variables in XML

Using Frame 7.1 creating XML

We have standard variables that we use (e.g., InstrumentName)
When I add a variable to my doc, then edit the definition, save etc. The variable is retaining the original definition. As well, my entity statement for the variable is not being picked up by Frame, again it reverts to the original definition in Frame.
Has anyone else seen this or have suggestions to what I am doing wrong.

Thanks,
-Jen-
