Hello gentlemen, thank you for your help. To answer you all at once -  

In the short term I followed Wade's suggestion and opened the file before I printed to .pdf and it worked!! 

To answer you Tim - I tried to print to a .ps file and got the message that the document had unavailable fonts - at least I found out what was wrong with it.  Which leads me on to your comments, Bill - I have tried everything I can think of that is suggested in the forum to get rid of this message - the font in question is NOT used in the chapter. I have fiddled with maker.ini etc but nothing works.  Last time it happened to a different document I had to virtually retype the whole document - in this case it is not an option. Any fixes for that?  I am reluctant to use the Preferences>Remember Missing Font Names option as a solution because I am unsure what may happen if the document is opened at another workstation which may have different fonts installed. Remember I am a beginner at this.... Thanks again - Judy
