For FM 6 and earlier, you need to save as EPS from Illustrator. FM7 imports AI files. In the Save as EPS, set the options to have v.9 or earlier compatibility, TIFF (B&W) preview - opaque, Do NOT include Thumbnails, Include Document Fonts, CMYK Postscript, Level 2 or 3 (use three unless you know that you're going to be outputting to older Level 2 devices).
