The chapters in this file are very brief, so the decision has been made to combine them into sections, and have each of four sections constitute one file. Therefore, there could be six or more chapters in one section (which is only around 65 pages). Why do you care how many pages in a chapter? Why was the decision made to combine these, based on what factors? If you want to take advantage of the way FrameMaker numbers, with the least hassle, assign each of your chapters its own file. So, break them up again. Otherwise, think about why you define chapters the way you do. Maybe these "sections" are really "sections" and not "chapters" and would benefit more by autonumbering a paragraph style than "chapter" numbering. You could, for example, break all your chapters into separate files, create two additional files, one called "section1" and the other "section2." Use <$volnum> to control the section numbering. The "section1" and "section2" files could be 2 pages that only contained a cover for the particular section. Or, you could use <$volnum> without ever creating these two files. Cheers, Sean
