Autonumber paras across chapters

Hello,

I want to have a multi-chapter book, each chapter of which has standard numbered headings at various levels. So far, no problem.

In addition to this, I want to add a second set of numbers which run across the entire book and are independent of the other numbering system. Heading1 paras should be numbered sequentially (1, 2, etc.) and other, lower level paras should be alphabetised (a, b, etc.) within that. I want these numbers to appear in mirrored margins.

(This is a standard system used in grammars in my field.)

Seems that the mirroring suggests I use side heads. But after that, I'm unsure what to do. Can I set up counters at the book rather than chapter level? Or do I have to do it all by hand once the book is finished?

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Actually,
You should be setting all numbering properties for your book using the Numbering properties in the Book File.
For paragraphs, select all the chapters except the first one, right click, select Numbering > Paragraphs > and then Increment from previous chapters.
Then do the same thing to the first chapter, but set the Paragraph property to start numbering at 1.
Save the files, then update the book.

Use the same method, but the Chapter tab, to set the chapter numbering.

Thank-you, Art.

Will that help automate the side-head numbering? (The explanation in the manual is pretty cursory. It sounds more like a side head is a regular head that is then moved... I've no previous experience of this.)

That would be the method you should use for the side head numbering, yes. This step controls the action of the counters -- whether they're incremented, restart, or contain a custom text message.

The counters are actually invoked by the paragraph tags, which also control the formatting and the way the counters are presented in the document. One thing that you should do when setting up numbering in your paragraph tags, that is often overlooked, is to specify a numbering stream. Frame has 57 streams that can be assigned to track different things. A particular stream is invoked by starting the autonumbering string with a letter and colon -- A: or a:, for instance -- and then the numbering counters. Some people might use c: or C: for chapters, H: for heads, or S: for a sidehead.

So two steps, with different purposes.

Thank-you, that is very helpful, and much appreciated!

I was aware of the streams (though I don't remember that word, exactly), but it didn't occur to me to invoke that. It all comes with experience, I guess!

Best

Hi, Karljrgen:

Unless side headings are a layout requirement, you don't need to use this paragraph format property to accomplish the numbering sequences that Art's explained. However, you do need a dedicated paragraph format to maintain these headings in their own stream.

Hello Peter,

Thanks for the additional info.

I believe I understand--yes, it's a layout issue. I'd attach a scan of an example (but doesn't look like I can do that). Effectively, the issue is that any given section or para would have two references, one based on the structure of the document (nested headings) and a linear one throughout the book. Also, the linear one should always be farthest from the binding. Something like this:

1 1. Main Heading
         1.1 Subheading

a Grammar Para 1 Grammar Para 2

etc. (assuming this is the left page. On a right page, the 1 etc would be on the other side)

Hello again,

Ok, seems to more or less work as I had hoped, but for one thing.

On the right pages, I would like the side head numbering to left justify; on the left pages, I'd like it to right justify. In other words, so the side heads "hug" the main text frame.

Is there a way to do that?

Thanks again,

K
