Spaces with cup underneath not printing

FrameMaker 7.1, Win XP

Some of the spaces in my document have a cup thing underneath:

 <http://flyingmoose.com/space.gif>

It doesn't print, so my printout has spaces missing (that is, two words together with no space in between).

Any idea what's going on?

Thanks.

It's a no-break space. Turn off View > Text Symbols and it should look
like a regular space.

But it should print as a space. If you print to PDF, does it get
preserved as a space?

If you want to get rid of them, search for "\ " (backslash space,
without the quotes) and replace with a regular space.

As Ken explained, it's the character FM uses to represent a non-breaking space.

Because neither it nor the space before is printing, though, I'd ask if the file or parts of it maybe came in from Word or another application.

If so, it could be any of many Word hidden characters or sequences that may use the same symbol but mean something else. So if the text was imported, I'd suggest saving the FM file out as a MIF in order to remove stray characters. Then open the MIF file -- you should be able to see right away if the character is still there -- and save that as FM.

Printed as a PDF:

Also, it seems to leave in the space if I use Acrobat Distiller, but removes it if I used Acrobat PDFWriter or Adobe PDF.

The text is pasted in from a PDF.

I just made a completely new document, and put in some words with non-breaking spaces (Ctrl-Space) in between them, and it's not printing those either (depending on where I print it to). It prints them in Acrobat Distiller, but not other places.

I know I don't like PDFWriter. I think I don't like your printer. But
Adobe PDF should honor the no-break space. Are you sure printing to
Adobe PDF kills the space?

Anyway, since they're not serving any useful purpose, I would want to
get rid of them (see my first post for search and replace instructions).
But I would also want to figure out what's going on with the printer.

If you want, I can look at your file (zip and send to kbenson at pegtype
dot com), but I think I'm going to find it's just a regular no-break
space and prints just fine on my clonescript laser printer.

Are you printing to an Acrobat printer instance, or trying to SaveAs (printing is always preferred)?

And, was there a change after washed the file by saving to MIF?

John,

When using FM, your default printer should really be the Adobe PDF
printer instance (or in case you're using a really old version of
Acrobat, then the Distiller printer instance). There's a utility from
Sundorne Communications called SetPrint that will automatically set
the default for you. See
http://www.sundorne.com/FrameMaker/Freeware/setPrint.htm

FYI, the PDFWriter is a totally obsolete product and is no longer
supported. Which version of Acrobat are you using with FM?

What physical printer are you using that doesn't allow the direct
print out of the hard spaces? Are you using the latest drivers for
this device? Is your version of FM7.1 fully patched to the p116
version (check with Help > About in your FM menus)?

Hi, John:

You're getting lots of good advice to trouble-shoot and solve your problem, from good folks here on the list.

I want to thank you for including a screen shot that solves one of *my* problems, which is:

What the heck is a "cup thing?" <G>

Thanks for the help everyone.

My Acrobat is version 4.1.

It leaves out the space on a brand new Epson inkjet printer with the newest driver. It works perfectly on my 13-year old LaserJet with 10-year-old drivers. It also works properly on my Canon copier with Fiery RIP (with 5-year-old Windows-98 drivers).

I'm going to remove the non-breaking spaces (I don't need them), and make sure to use the Distiller to convert to PDF. Note that I don't "save as file", I print to PDF and then the PDF converter asks where to save it.

Thanks again everyone for helping to solve my problem.

John,

>I print to PDF and then the PDF converter asks where to save it

A safer route would be to print to the Distiller printer instance on
the FILE: port and then run Distiller to convert the postscript to
PDF.

FWIW, your Acrobat version is five releases old.
