Hi, We are currently looking for a way to translate/export FM-files to the new ebook format ePub. I know that Indesign has an export functionality for this kind of format. But we have a few thousand documents in FM-files from which we have produced PDFs. Now our customer wants us to convert these files to ePub. Does someone know a way to convert FM files to the ePub format? Is there an export filter? If we save the files to XML we will loose a lot of layout work. Or could we import the FM files in Indesign? Did someone try to create ePub files from a FrameMaker source? We use FrameMaker8.x (and FM7.2) on WinXP SP2. Thanks Georg

Hi, Georg: Have you looked at MIF Filter, the commercial InDesign plug-in from dtptools.com, that converts MIF to InDesign? They also have a free utility, FM2MIF, that batch-converts .fm files to .mif files. MIF Filter's conversions to ID are nearly "carbon copies" of FM originals, but because of differences between the two applications, the conversions use a variety of strategies. The results of converting FM to ID may or may not work for exporting from ID as ePub. HTH ________________ Regards, Peter Gold KnowHow ProServices

I suppose this is a silly question, but why wouldn't you buy ePublisher and use that? As far as I know, all versions still take in native FM file? Art

A quick check tells me that ePub is XHTML plus some extras. So if your FrameMaker documents are structured and you can save them to valid XML it would take a XSLT transform to create the ePub sources. If your documents are not structured, this is your chance (aka 'business case') to implement Structured FrameMaker. - Michael MοΏ½ller-Hillebrand

Hi, Peter: The problem with the MIF Filter from dtptools.com is that you pay per converted page. We will have to convert abou 30.000 pages which would cost more than 5000 Euro. Art: I do not know anything about ePublisher and we would prefer a free tool. But your question is not silly at all. Michael: We found a free, experimental tool that does what you proposed. Take a look here: <http://toc.oreilly.com/2008/06/open-source-docbook-xsl-experimental-epub-support-released.html> It seems to be a bit tricky to use and the layout seems not to be correct with the first use but we will give it a try. Thanks Georg
