I want to number the appendix pages A-1, B-1, etc. when the rest of the book is numbered sequentially. Is that possible? I can make it work in the file, but the TOC won't pick it up. How would I do this?

You need to add the <$chapnum> building blocks to your TOC entries for those paratags in the TOC Reference page.

Carole, I had this same problem a while back. If you look back in this forum at a thread titled "Custom page numbering generating Indexes/Tables of Contents/Lists of Figures & Tables", you should find your answer. Brian

Assuming that your CurrentPage variable on each page is set up in the format <$ChapNum>-<PageNum>... It sounds as if you haven't set the numbering properties for the component files of the book in the book file. This configures the type of string displayed by the <$chapnum> variable. In the book file, highlight Ap A. Right click > Numbering > Chapter and set it to start at A and use Alpha style. Apply and Save the book. Then, highlight all the other Aps. Right click > Numbering > Chapter and set it to increment and use Alpha style. Apply and Save the book. Update the book.

Brian, this may be a duplicate. Not sure if it got posted. I tried to change the TOC reference page but it just added 1- to all the other pages. I'm just not sure which pagenum lines to add <$volnum>- to Any ideas? Thanks for any help. OK to email me direct if you have the time. Carole

Carole, If you are using <$volnum>, then you need to set the volume number (from the book file) for subsequent chapters to increment from the previous volume. Most people use <$chapnum> as the chapter number, but you still have to set the chapter numbering to increment from previous. Van

Hi, In the book window, have you right-clicked each FM chapter and set the chapter number? Setting up <$chapnum>-<$pagenum> on the reference pages of your TOC is half the battle. Next, right-click each chapter in turn and set chapter, page, and paragraph numbering. The first chapter you might set to "1" "Numeric," the first page you might set to "1" "Numeric," and the first paragraph you might set to "Restart Paragraph Numbering." But for subsequent chapters, pages, and paragraphs, you might choose "Continue Numbering ...." Cheers, Sean

But for subsequent chapters, pages, and paragraphs, you might choose "Continue Numbering ...." However, if you have numbered tables and figures and you want the numbering to start at 1 for each chapter, set PARAGRAPH numbering to restart for each chapter.

Right. I wouldn't restart those things for each chapter, but you can. Play with it and see what meets your need. Cheers, Sean
