Anchors above anchored frames

Hi all, I'm developing some templates for computer software manuals. I need a nice neat generic method for adding images and their titles. I need the figure titles to be positioned in the side heading, aligned with the top of the figure beside it. For tables I use a TableTitle side heading paragraph format that has a Table paragraph format after it with a negative space after value. The table format has a negative space before value, so when inserted it lines up nicely with the top of the table title. I would like to do something similar for figures, but I can't seem to find a method of positioning the anchored frame that works. 'Below current line' would be ideal, if that didn't leave me with the line holding the anchor above it, which the side heading is then aligned with instead. Is there a way to apply a paragraph format to the anchored frame that would allow me to enter a negative space before value like i do with the table? Or is there some other way to align the anchored frame with the top of the title beside it? Thanks very much to anyone who can help, Kat

I have perhaps answered my own question within the question! I'm guessing I should just insert the image in a table??

No, I still get issues with a line being included above or below the anchored frame in the table cell to hold the anchor.

You could use a table, but in most situations, most people would use a two-tag set -- the TableTitle/FigureTitle side head followed by an Anchor tag in-column that is only used to hold the table or figure anchor and doesn't carry text. It makes locating the table or frame anchor mush easier because it can't be buried and hidden in text. And it gives you more location options for positioning. Art

Hi Katherine, Your last problem is, that there is an empty line in the table cell, which holds your anchored frame with the graphics? Then just select anything in the anchored frame and press ESC p m (not together, one key after the other). Then the anchored frame auto-adjusts to the size of the graphics. It's then positioned "At Insertion Point". Tables with only a single cell are often used to hold graphics. Best regards Winfried

I have tried using the two tags idea, in the same way as I have for tables, but it only worked for tables because as well as having the negative value for Space after in the tag applied to the anchor paragraph, I could also apply a negative value for Space before in the table itself. I can't find a way to do that in an anchored frame, so however high I set the negative Space after value in the anchor paragraph tag, the anchored frame is still not moved up high enough. I've tried the table idea Winifried and Esc P M brought up the New Master Page dialog. Am I keying the shortcut incorrectly? I tried manually setting the Anchored frame to be positioned 'At insertion point' and it then was inserted upwards from the insertion point, in front of all the text preceding the table. Thanks for helping, Kat

Hi Katherine, Sorry. The shortcut is: ESC m p Your graphics should be in a table with a single cell. The space above/below and the (otherwise empty) anchor paragraph should be similar to those of your other tables. This way the table will be positioned correctly. The paragraph format for the anchored frame should be set to have no fixed line spacing. Best regards Winfried

Kat, I hope I understand your problem correctly. The paragraph containing the figure title is positioned in the side head with alignment set to Top Edge. Then that paragraph is followed by another paragraph, which of course is in the main text column, empty, and aligned at the top with the side head. With the insertion point in the second paragraph, import the image file. This puts the image below the line. Select the image, not the anchored frame, and scale it if necessary. If not created at the correct size, you probably want to scale it down to fit the width of the text column. Now press the key sequence Esc, m, p (note m and p are lowercase). The anchored frame shrinks to fit tightly around the image and changes it position to At Insertion Point. If you turn on Text Symbols, you will see the end-of-paragraph symbol at the lower right edge of the image, and the top of the anchored frame will align with the TOP of the side head text. You also have to be sure the line spacing of the paragraph holding the image is NOT fixed or Frame will move the image up. Hope this is what you need, Van

Kat, Forgot to add that the method I mentioned in the previous post does not require the use of tables to position the graphics. Of course, I may not have understood exactly what you are trying to achieve. Van

Kat, In addition to these suggestions, you may also want to look at the ImpGraph plug-in by Bruce Foster (see: http://home.comcast.net/~bruce.foster/ImpGraph.htm ) and/or Auto-Text by Steve Kubis (see: http://www.siliconprairiesoftware.com/Products.html ). Both of these would help you create a consistent method/layout for inserting graphics. There's a quick little review of Auto-Text by Rick Henkel at http://rickhenkel.googlepages.com/autoplug.htm

Thank you so much everyone - that has done it!! A combination of using the shrink wrap shortcut and making sure that the line spacing for the paragraph format holding the anchor isn't set to Fixed has finally allowed me to achieve exactly what I needed. I couldn't understand why the 'At insertion point' option was making the anchored frame overlay the text above, so thank you in particular for clearing that up for me. Phew!
