Unwanted bookmarks when generating a PDF in FM 8.0

I have a issue about generating bookmarks when creating a PDF. After I have finished my book, I identify my bookmarks while in the PDF setup window. But for some reason, FM creates bookmarks for paragraph tags that I didn't choose. This is happening in particular to my table of contents. I even reconstructed the book file and created a new table of contents, list of figures and list of tables from scratch, paying close attention to every step and I still get the bookmarks I didn't ask for. If anyone has any advice for me I would appreciate it (Adobe or non-Adobe affiliated). My work email is anthony.restivo@zodiacaerospace.com.... feel free to contact me. Thank you in advance.

TOC links from entries in the FM TOC aren't bookmarks per se, they're cross references. Is that what you're talking about? And, if not, do you have "Generate Tagged PDF" turned on?

Hey Art...thanks for responding. The begining of the TOC, I have the Table Of Contents title marked as a Contents Marker. When I set the bookmarks (in the PDF Setup for Selected Files dialog box)....I have in the "Include Paragraphs:" window......Contents Marker as the first level....so FM sees that and grabs that as the bookmark.....I also have Heading 1, heading 2, heading 3 and heading 4 as progressively increasing "Bookmark levels"....the problem I am having seems to be a problem exclusive to FM 8 because the other writer here has FM 7 and was able to set everything up just fine. Let me know what you think..... Anthony

I think more information is needed... So, given the arrangement you have in the previous post (that is, ONLY Contents Marker, Heading 1, Heading 2, Heading 3, and Heading 4 paragraph formats in the Include Paragraphs list), what is listed in the bookmarks pane of the PDF file?

Anthony, I may just be under-cafienated, but I'm not understanding from your description which bookmarks are the unwanted ones. You're specifying the Contents title and H1 - H4s marked to include as bookmarks in the PDF, right? So what's being generated in addition to those?

Art.. In addition to those you mentioned....it seemed that TitleTOC was being added by FM as something to bookmark. Van...as I was telling Art... Contents Marker, H1 thru H4 were the only items that I identified in the bookmarks pane for PDF setup...FM decided "on its own" to add TitleTOC as a bookmark.....and we have no idea why it did that without being prompted.

Anthony, Let us be clear. Is Contents Marker the name of a paragraph format? Or is it a marker? If the latter, maybe the marker is in a paragraph that is tagged with the TitleTOC paragraph format. Moreover, are Contents Marker paragraph format and the TitleTOC paragraph format applied to two separate and distinct paragraphs?

Van.... The Contents Marker is the name of a paragraph format. The TitleTOC is a marker (I verified this by looking at them with the "Text Symbols" View). Both the Contents Marker and the TitleTOC are applied to the same paragraph (well that is if you consider the table of contents a paragraph. Hopefully that makes things clearer.

OK, what, exactly, is the TitleTOC marker being used for? Or put another way, what does the marker contain?

The TitleTOC is a marker that is created by FM when we autogenerate a Table of Contents. We also have markers that FM calls Heading1TOC, Heading2TOC, etc.... When we tell FM that we want it to include the paragraph formats Title, Heading1, Heading2 in the TOC (when autogenerating the TOC), FM creates the markers TitleTOC, Heading1TOC, Heading2TOC (respectively). FM creates these markers so that when the book is updated any time in the future, FM doesn't view the TitleTOC, Heading1TOC, Heading2TOC markers as the paragraph formats that they represent. Funny thing is though...that FM is not assigning bookmarks to the Heading1TOC, Heading2TOC, etc... just the TitleTOC. We think it is a software glitch of some sort (think being the key word there)....but we aren't sure. Maybe you gentlemen have some ideas? Thanks...

Anthony, That particular marker should be in place. But this is unlikely to be a software glitch. There are several things that I'd try to resolve the situation. First, with the Existing TOC, SaveAs MIF, and reopen the MIF and save it back as an FM file. This will clean out any corrupting characters, if any exist. If there's no change at that point, remove the existing TOC from the book and (on disk, change the filename). Then add a new TOC to the book, save, update, and generate. Then pull the PDF again. Yes, I know the formatting will not be correct, but that can be fixed later. Right now you're just playing with the Bookmarks. If that doesn't work... I'd create a new book and add a couple of the files from your original to it. Then add a TOC and see how that works. Art

Thank you sir. I will try the things you have suggested and see what happens. I will let you know how it works out. If we don't correspond again today....have a nice weekend. Anthony
