Hello, I'm using Frame 8.0p266 on WinXP and had a template that I created in 7 which had lovely headers and footers comprised of a couple of accent graphics, a horizontal rule, some static text (pulled from a variable I created), and several automated elements which were essentially Chapter number and name on right pages and Heading one on left pages. Now none of the automated variables are working...anywhere. The static text shows up, the graphics and rules show up, but there is nothing where the Running H/F is. I've done everything I can think of including: creating documents from scratch, modifying the template, deleting all graphics, resetting styles. Nothing worked. I even took the Frame output from a project created in Flare that had perfect headers and footers and copied them directly into a new document, They did not work. The only things left to try are voodoo dolls and calling in sick...

Marybeth, Did you open the 7 file in 8, or do something else to get it into 8? Like importing formats? Does it still work in 7? And when you go to the master page in 8, and open the variable in the footer, are the building blocks intact and what they should be? Art

Hi Art, You sort of hit it on the head. I don't know exactly what the process was to fix it. I couldn't open the files in 7.2 once I'd opened them in 8. So, I created a blank FM in 7.2 and incorporated every element of the Wicked Evil Header from the template. Added some text, user variables, and then system variables. Viewed it in 7.2 and it was fine. Opened it in 8 and it was fine. Imported the styles into my template and it died. Our (tech docs team) theory is that something corroded when we brought the template from 7.2 to 8.0. We've gotten several MIF issues lately for other reasons. I'm not sure how it's connected but it seems to be. Hrm, I didn't try building one in 8 and then importing the styles. So it looks like the fix is to recreate the whole template in a fresh file. I don't know why. I wonder if I will have to go back and do it in 7.2 and import it.

You mention using 8.0p266, that means there are two updates that you don't seem to have applied. I'd strongly suggest updating as a good preventative for miscellaneous problems, as there were many under-the-hood fixes in both updates. For details on each update, check the variously named "read me" files that are in the FM install directory. Note that the updates are not cumulative, so you have to do them in order and apply each one. <http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=22&platform=Windows>
