Getting Change Bars to stay to the outside of the page

We just recently migrated to FrameMaker 8.0p266 on Windows XP and are having a problem getting our change bars to always appear on the outside edge (away from the binding) of the page. It's ben awhile since I have edited a document in FrameMaker, but I'm sure I was able to do this in FM 7.

FWIW, we're using conditional text to mark changes in the documents we're maintaining. We mark the text with a tag that turns on the change bar and colors the text. this corresponds to the date of the revision and modifies the date in the page header. A second tag marks it as deleted or inserted and strikes it through or underlines it, respectively.

So, is there a way to push change bars to the outside of the page in FM 8 or is my memory faulty...again?

Thanks.

William,

Select Format > Document > Change Bars. You can set the properties of the change bars there. I do not use change bars, so I am guessing that closer to and farther from the page edge refers to the binding.

At first I was going to say that doesn't seem to have the desired affect, but on closer examination of the problem, we're only experiencing the issue in a file that has an unusual master page setup. It is the file containing the cover and the release history for the document. Of course the cover doesn't have a page number and is a right page. So, the right master is set up for this. The left master is set up to contain page numbers and all the standard formatting that is found inside the document. Then, we have a third master caled "Right with Page Numbers" that is a mirror image fo the left master. So, I wonder if there is a problem in the configuration of the master pages that could be causing this. What should I be looking for in the masterpage settings that could fix this problem?

Thanks for the inputs.

Bill,

I did a careful reading of the online help, and it states, "The position is relative to the edges of the column that contains the changed text, regardless of the number of columns on the page." And then I played around with it.

Apparently, closer and farther refer to the side of the TEXT column (or frame if there is only one column) that is closer to or farther from AN edge of the paper, not necessarily the binding edge.

So, you are correct in that it has something to do with the master pages. Make sure that all master pages are consistent in their left and right margins. If the margin toward the binding side is the larger, then right pages should have the larger margin on the left and left pages should have the larger margin on the right. For THIS case, closer to the page edge refers to the NONbinding edge; farther from the page edge refers to the binding edge, because the text column is farther from the page edge on that side.

If the page margins are equal, then I do not know which is closer and which is farther. You will have to experiment.

So, for a FIXED choice of closer to or farther from the page edge, you can switch the position of the change bars by simply moving the text frame right or left.

Hope this helps,
Van

Bill, although it may not have any bearing on your change bar issue, you really should update FM to the latest version which is p277. There are many significant fixes from p266.

FM updates are *not* "roll-up" meaning that you have to do both the available updates (p273 and p277) individually, in order lowest to highest, as compared to many other applications where the updates are cumulative, i.e. "roll-up" where you only have to do one single update to bring it up to the most recent version.
