I converted a Word file to FM. Now, one chapter per file. Inserted xrefs. In some chapters, the xrefs to other sections w/i the file don't "stick," that is, I insert an xref by selecting a Source Type: Pgrafs, select a pgraf style and the pgraf I want, and an xref style, and click Insert. Inserts the appropriate info, but when I close and repoen the file, the xrefs all point to the first pg of the file (see more below). If I d-click the xref (even immed after inserting it), the dialog box shows Marker Type: cross ref and the list of markers is empty. If I reselect Source Type: Pgrafs, the pgraf tag, and the one I want, and then Insert, when I reopen the xref, it still reverts to Marker Type: cross ref, etc. All the xrefs to places in the current file revert to the first heading on the first page in the file (when the xref style is heading & page)and the first page of the file (when the xref style is page # only). The file has xrefs to other chapters in the book work and they work fine. There are 10chapters in the book and this problem occurs in five of them. BTW, when I insert a xref marker in one of these "broken" files, and then try to insert an xref to the marker, the marker does not appear in the list of markers. Workls in other chapters in this book. FrameMaker 8.0p266 Windows XP Sony Vaio

This sounds like a problem that was fixed by an update; check the Adobe updates site, the latest is 8.0p277. Be sure to apply each of the two updates in sequence (273 first, then 277). <http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=22&platform=Windows>

Hi Sheila I tried the upgrades, but no luck. After some poking around, including running a list of markers, I discovered that the Frame file was loaded with empty X-ref markers, and many times the markers were in the same place. For example, sometimes there were 6 empty markers at the beginning of a line. Odd thing is, the empty markers were in places where the original Word file did not have x-refs. The list of markers only included "valid" markers (the ones with preceded with a FM-generated number) for the first two chapters. So, in the broken chapters, I deleted the empty markers, ran the list again, and the empty markers were gone. Then, I went back to the file and re-inserted the x-refs and this time they all work. And, ran the list ofmarkers again and all the valid markers appear.

The empty x-refs at the beginning of a chapter was an issue with an earlier 8.x version, I don't know which one. The following description in one of FM 8's Readme files: Issue number: 1177762 Creating a cross-reference from document A to document B and then undoing the action does not remove the cross-reference marker in document B. The creation of the cross-reference is recorded as a Typing action in document A, and can be undone. However, the action also inserts a marker in the referenced document. This marker-insertion operation is not undoable.

Hi Sheila, Just realized that I never replied. There were empty cross-ref markers pappered throughout the document, not just at the beginning. Although, perhaps the same behavior would account for them anyway. I ended up manually deleting them all from the FM file, and then going back and adding the cross-refs back and everything is working. Thanks for the input! Deborah

My framemaker book shows three chapters having xref errors. Inspite of fixing the xrefs and saving the files, I get the errors when I open the chapters. Any idea what could be wrong and how to fix this? Thanks B.

B. If you make a cross-reference from one file to another, be sure you save BOTH files, including the one that contains the target of the cross-reference. You may think you made no changes to the target file, but Frame did. Van
