Hi everyone, and especially you, the developers of Illustrator and other Adobe programs...: I work a lot in both 3ds Max and Illustrator, and I often find myself working with hundreds of thousand polygons. The selection tools are so cool in 3ds Max, and give me every option of selecting faces on a complex model... For instance - just naming SOME options available in 3ds Max: Rectangular selection* Circular selection Fence selection (selection in perfect straight lines) Lasso Selection* Paint selection (like a brush - everything within the stroke gets selected) Soft selection (Selection method using a tolerance setting, see reference picture: <http://fanous.persiangig.com/egg/egg03.gif> ) Video examples of some different ways to select in 3ds Max: <http://www.digitaltutors.com/store/video.php?detectqt=false&vid=1694> * Illustrator present Another thing I think is missing in Illustrator is the ability to "make selection from guides" - because, you already have the ability to make costume guides, but you can't make a selection out of them. There are soooo many tips and tricks you developers of Adobe products could "borrow" from 3ds Max... Fx. Using the clike of the scroll wheel on the mouse as "Hand tool" instead of the "Space command" on the keyboard. In Indesign it is especially a pain in the ass, when you are in the middle of writing text, and just need to have a look further down on the page, then you get a double space in the text when clicking space. - Imagine how easy it would be with a click on the scroll button on the mouse instead?! Cheers! Martin

In a 2D vector program like Illustrator, the most versatile selection interface I can imagine would be the ability to use any path as a selection marquee and/or as a cutting path. Far more elegant solution than an array of separate selection tools. As for selection/replacement by attributes, Adobe already owns the best treatment for this ever to occur in a mainstream vector drawing program: FreeHand's Graphic Find & Replace. JET

The part with Illustrator being a 2D program and 3ds Max being a 3D program doesn't make any difference - we are basically talking about the same things -> points, paths (edges), and faces. I just think that 3ds Max is way smarter - you have every possibility of selecting certain faces or points of choice. I like your idea of a "selection marquee" though, and correct me if I am wrong (I have very poor knowledge of Free Hand), but what you mean is a selection tool, that behaves the same way as the "pen tool" in Illustrator? That could become very handy :) Anyway, I still believe that there are many other ways to select smarter... I personally don't mind an array of selection tools - but still I agree that a pen selection tool would be great, and so would a "circular selection tool" - see why in my example: <http://i636.photobucket.com/albums/uu90/Martink21_2009/flower.jpg>

There is nothing in your example that would not be addressed by the ability to convert a path into a selection. You would draw the circle, rightClick, and choose Make Selection from the cursor menu.
One of the [many] problems with Illustrator's selection interface is there is no provision for chosing between contact sensitive and enclose modes, as other drawing programs provide.
I personally don't mind an array of selection tools
I do. It's horribly inelegant. Illustrator already has several examples of multiple tools that collectively can't do as well as a single tool does in other programs. It makes for too many tool changes, too much clutter, needless tedium.
For one example, note that there are six "different" text tools--yet Illustrator's text handling interface is among the worst.

"There is nothing in your example that would not be addressed by the ability to convert a path into a selection. You would draw the circle, rightClick, and choose Make Selection from the cursor menu." I guess I misunderstood you then, probably due to my lack of experience with Free Hand, but I see your point now... If you would be able to take all tools like ellipsee, polygons, rectangles and so forth, and convert them to a selection, you would have a very powerful tool at your hands. But can we agree that the selection methods today areridiculousus in Illustrator? ;)

Additional tool clutter is THE LAST thing needed in this program. Pep, all that's needed for the functionality you are so poorly trying to describe is a "Contact Sensitive" toggle setting for the existing marquee selection tools. JET

I use 3D MAX and not just that I lack, and as much as AI. Indd in fact often happens left characters in the text and it is dangerous.

The methods of marking my momentary lack of facilities to enable and disable hidden option in the preferences: - Object Selection by Path Only - Type Object Selection by Patch Only I lack a working day within the instantaneous access when using the select tool for example, by holding down Alt key, this would be very better for me without having to continuously enter the Outline mode.

The thing about 3ds Max's selection methods was just to show you all (and the programmers), that there are so many other possibilities better than the selection tools given in Illustrator... It wasn't a final answer, but I posted it so we could debate on various selection methods in various programs to make Illustrator even better! And many users of Illustrator obviously don't know, what they are missing :) Cheers to you all! And keep coming with more suggestions :)
