If I copy to the clipboard, Illustrator freezes for 15-30 seconds before responding again. This long pause does not happen on my other machine with Win98, but does on Windows 2000. The CPU monitor shows 0% CPU utilization during the pauses, except for spikes to 100% ever 10 seconds or so.  

Paste is quick. It's not a complexity or overall machine speed issue. It's not lack of ram.  

I've updated Windows, including downloading the Illustrator compatibility patch. I've reinstalled Illustrator. 

I have Illustrator 8.0.1, on Windows 2000 Professional. Machine is an HP OmniBook with no CD ROM or Floppy, but several network drives.  

Any clues for me?
