Cross Platform font issues

In our editorial department, copywriting and editing takes place on a PC, but our production department lays out all the files on MAC. We are running into serious font and formatting issues; essentially any font or formatting I do on the PC is lost when the material is processed wiht inDesign. If I switch from Word over to inCopy, will the formatting cross over? It's very time consuming for the production department to go back and re-format the inDesign document.
