Huston, I have a strange problem. I produced a document in PM7 a few months ago and now I open it to find that Arial Black has turned italic. It's not checked as italic and clicking the italic button does nothing. I've Googled this problem and other people have had this problem with this same font in other programs. It's been suggested it's due to a bug in Windows XP, which I'm using. Microsoft Word shows this font upright, it's just in PM, even if I type out a new piece of text it still comes out italic. Solutions have been reinstalling the Arial Black font or deleting the italic version. I've found this font in the Windows folder but should it not be in the PM font folder where the problem lies. I've looked in that folder and the font file names are unrecognisable. This is my office PC and I'm a bit too scared to touch anything like that, I'll have to get someone from IT to sort it, but being as I'm the only graphic designer here and the only one who has PM I reckon our IT guys may need a little help.

Try trashing the configuration files (PM*.cnf) and font lists (AdobeFnt*.lst). They be will recreated next time the application is loaded. Iechyd da! John 16:05 11/02/2009 GMT

Thanks John, you're a fountain of knowledge. I couldn't find the PM*.cnf file but I found quite a few AdobeFnt*.lst files. I'll get someone from IT to have a look and let you know the result.

The PM Config files are located in [PMDIR]\RSRC\[LANGUAGE] which on my PC is C:\Program Files\Adobe\PageMaker 7.0\RSRC\UKENGLSH You may wish to just rename them so you can re-instate them if necessary, but new ones are created if they are absent. Have no worries about deleting the AdobeFnt*.lst files. Iechyd da! John 13:54 12/02/2009 GMT

Well, IT have deleted the files you suggested but unfortunately the problem remains. I had a free programme called 'To Bach', by Draig Technology Ltd, downloaded onto my PC some months ago, it's for special welsh characters, and that was examined to see if it was causing the problem but apparently it is not. It seems to be only PM7 that's affected in this way. Arial Black is upright in Photoshop CS2 and Microsoft Word. Anyway, thanks for your help John and if you have anymore helpfull suggestions I would be gratefull.

Im having the same problem too and have also tried everything that was mentioned here with no luck. With me, the original files were created on Pagemaker on an XP machine and use to work fine! I open them now on either the XP machine or the newer Vista machine and its showing italic with both...ugh! It use to work, what happened???

This actually has to do with Service Pack 3 of Windows XP. For some reason, it changed Arial Black. To get the old font back, go into C:\Windows\Fonts and delete Arial Black, file name ariblk.ttf. Then go to C:\WINDOWS\$NtServicePackUninstall$ and copy the ariblk.ttf into your C:\Windows\Fonts folder.
